In the blink of an eye

The other day I caught myself crying

While I was holding you sleeping in my arms,

Breathing steadily, my warm hot water-bottle.

How can you already be this big?

It was only yesterday that you came from my womb,

That my world changed for the better.

Here you are now, eyes as blue as the sea,

Smiling and shining up at me,

You’re giggles and laughs all day.

An explorer is what you are,

Taking everything between your tiny hands,

Tasting whatever you can grab.

Then you take my head between your hands

You don’t know this yet,

But it means everything.

Time feels different since you’re here,

It’s faster when I don’t look and endless when I stare,

-And I could forever.

In the blink of an eye, you’re all grown up,

And these memories of when you were small

Seem even further away than they already are.

So I try and suck everything in,

All your sweet smells, cheerful voice, soft touch,

I write it all down, those sacred diamonds, sealed forever in my treasure chest.
