An Instant
In a rosebush in my garden,
An unusual place they say,
One blue tit and another
Have built a nest in May.
Three eggs is what it shelters,
This momentary home,
To give what will be needed
Before they’re off alone.
Then on a sunny morning,
The clouds are far away,
The little eggs they crack,
The shells they break away.
Now little ones are chirping,
Blue bellies twist and turn,
Mum and dad take turns
To try and get a worm.
Then back they both come crashing,
To give from beak to beak
A squiggly wiggly earthling,
And soon the chicks are meek.
The days go in, the days go out,
Blue bellies grow and grow,
And soon the chirping halts and what
Comes next is what I know.
I know that when the morning comes
The chicks will spread their wings
To take a leap and leave the rose,
And my heart too, it sings.
The birds are not the only ones
That now reach for the sky,
‘Cause I know that my time has come,
Like birds fly so must I.
